The Sinuses And Gutteral Pouch Flashcards
What is the mandible
The lower jawbone, large enough to accommodate the molars easily
In order to house the teeth and jaw the bones of the skull need to offer a wide and strong surface area. Why can this not be achieved through bone deposition?
The head would weigh far too much
How Is the skull widened and strengthened?
With air filled cavities known as sinuses
Are the sinuses involved with respiratory airflow?
Not directly however during expiration, the air within the sinuses is partially exchanged
Name the two types of sinuses
- The frontal sinus
- The super maxillary sinus
What is the guttural pouch?
The guttural pouch is formed by a cavity that extends back under the atlas and forward over the opening of the throat. It extends over the tissues that surround the throat, infection within this pouch can cause severe problems as many nerves and blood vessels run close to or through it
