Q

Describe the pathway of sensory fibres from the spinal cord to body innervation?

At what point do they unite with motor fibres?

A

Posterior horn - posterior rootlets - posterior root - dorsal root ganglion - mixed spinal nerve - rami

They unite with motor fibres in the mixed spinal nerve

Q

Why can pain from the diaphragm be referred to the shoulder?

A

C3, 4 and 5 of the Phrenic nerve supply the parietal peritoneum that lines the surface of the diaphragm

Supraclavicular nerves (C3, 4) supply the dermatomes over the shoulder

Both the supraclavicular and phrenic nerves enter the spinal cord at the same level and can be confused
