Cranial Nerve Actions Flashcards
What is the Olfactory nerve (CN I) responsible for?
Smell
What is the Optic nerve (CN II) responsible for?
Vision
What is the Oculomotor nerve (CN III) responsible for?
Movement of eyes and eyelids, constricts the pupils
What is the Trochlear nerve (CN IV) responsible for?
Assists in turning the eyes inferolaterally
What is the Trigeminal nerve (CN V) responsible for?
Sensation of cornea, scalp, forehead, eyelids, nose, lips and ANTERIOR 2/3rds of TONGUE
What is the Abducent nerve (CN VI) responsible for?
Turns the eyes laterally
What is the Facial nerve (CN VII) responsible for?
Moves muscles of expression, parasympathetic innervation of salivary glands as well as TASTE from ANTERIOR 2/3rds of TONGUE
What is the Vestibular nerve (CN VIII) responsible for?
Hearing from spiral organ, vestibular sensation
What is the Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) responsible for?
Assists with swallowing, TASTE from POSTERIOR 1/3rd or TONGUE
What is the Vagus nerve (CN X) responsible for?
Provides motor to muscles of pharynx, intrinsic muscles of larynx, muscles of palate and muscles in superior 2/3rds of oesophagus
Parasympathetic innervation to smooth muscle of trachea, bronchi, digestive tract and cardiac muscle of the heart
Visceral sensation of base of tongue, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, heart, oesophagus, stomach and intestines (to the left colic flexure)
Taste from epiglottis and palate
What is the Spinal Accessory nerve (CN XI) responsible for?
Motor to the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
What is the Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) responsible for?
Motor to the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue
