the spinal cord Flashcards
1
Q
what is an axon?
A
the part of the neurone that takes information away from the cell body towards the axon terminals
2
Q
what are axon terminals?
A
the hair-like ends of the axon which pass information on to another neurone
3
Q
what is the cell body?
A
the part of the cell containing the nucleus and mitochondria
4
Q
what are dentries?
A
extensions that recieve information from other neurons to take to the cell body in order to trigger an action potential
5
Q
what is the myelin sheath?
A
- the fatty substances that surrounds the axon to protect the nerve fibres
- helps speed up the rate of transmissions = the electrical impulse can jimp from one node (of ranvier) to the next
- prevents the loss of ions
- helps maintain electrochemical gradient
6
Q
what are schwann cells?
A
cells that produce myelin located within the myelin sheath
7
Q
what is the node of ranvier?
A
one of the many gaps in the myelin sheath
