Articulatory phonetics
The study of how speech sounds are made, or articulated.
Acoustic phonetics
The study of the physical properties of speech as sound waves in the air.
auditory phonetics (perceptual phonetics)
study the perception, via the ear, of speech sound.

Glottals
Using the glottis, the open space between the vocal folds

Stops (m)
Block airflow briefly, let go abruptly

Fricatives (m)
almost block the airflow and force through a narrow gap, creating a type of friction.

combine a brief stopping of the airflow with release through a narrow gap.
