The Solar System Flashcards
Intercellular cloud/ nebula
Huge clouds of gas/ dust that the solar system formed from
Solar system
Made up of the sun and planets and bodies that travel around it.
Protostar
The hot, condensed material at the center of the nebula
Solar nebula
The nebula that formed into our own solar system
Planetesimals
Tiny grains of condensed matter that form from the building blocks of planets by sticking together
Inner/ terrestrials planets
Planets that are closer the sun and are too hot for gases to remain only heavier elements, like nickel and iron are left behind
Asteroids
Small, rocky bodies that orbit the sun
Outer/ gas giant planets
Outer planets that attract dust, gases and planetesimals surrounding them, from strong gravities
Asteroid belt
A wide area asteroids orbit the sun between Jupiter and Mars
Meteoroid
A fragment of an asteroid or any material that falls from space and enters earths atmosphere.
Comets
Small bodies made up of ice and rock, leftover from the formation of space
Meteorite
The remaining part of a meteor if it doesn’t burn up completely that hits the earth
Meteor
A visible streak of light that is produced when a meteoroid burns up when entering the earths atmosphere.
Comet clusters
Kuiper belt and Oort Cloud located beyond Neptune orbit
