THE SKIN Flashcards
Name three important functions of the skin.
keeps the body from dehydration, the suns rays, regulates body temperature.
Name the three layers of the skin.
Epidermis, Dermis, lower subcutaneous layer.
The Epidermis is divided into three layers:
The cornified layer, the granular layer, the basal layer .
explain: the cornified layer
top layer made up of dead cells. contains keratin.
explain; the granular layer
made of cells produced by the malphighian layer. it is a layer of dying cells.
explain: the basal layer
intermost layer which produces new cells. cells contain melanin which protect us from the uv rays.
The dermis is made up of connnective tissue, name them:
capillaries, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, sensory nerve cells, hair follicles.
Function of capillaries
supply skin with food and oxygen and help control body temperature through hot and cold temperatures
function of sweat glands
produces sweat which cools the body through evaporation.
function of sebaceous glands
produce oily sebum that keeps the skin soft and supple and protects against the entry of bacteria and pathogens into the body.
function of sensory nerve cells
to feel external stimuli such as pain, heat, touch.
function of hair follicles
produce hairs that are made up of keratin. each hair originates from a follicle that produces a hair shaft.
another name for the subcutaneous layer:
The Hypodermis
function of the subcutaneous layer
consists of fatty tissue that is well supplied the blood vessels and nerves. this layer stores and releases fat in response to a variety of stimuli.
