The Skeleton Flashcards
What areas of the body are part of Axial Division?
Lie around the longitudinal axis of the skeleton.
Includes the Skull and associated bones; vertebral column; thorax (sternum and ribs). = about 40% of bones in the body.
Functions of the Axial Skeleton?
- Supports and protects organs
- Extensive Surface area or muscle attachment
- Adjusts the position of head, neck, trunk
- Stabilize/position the appendicular skeleton
- Participates in vital functions such as respiration
- Weight bearing
What areas of the body are considered when discussing Appendicular Division?
The upper and lower limbs and their girdles.
- The upper limb + the Pectoral Girdle
- Lower limb + the Pelvic Girdle
What is the function of the Pectoral girdle and what bones does it include?
The arm articulates with the trunk at the Pectoral girdle but the girdle does not articulate with the vertebral column. It is designed for mobility not stability.
Includes: Clavicles, Scapulae
What bones are considered to be part of the Upper Limb?
Humerus, Ulna, Radius, Carpals, Metacarpals, Phalanges
What is the function of the Pelvis Girdle and what bones are included?
The Pelvic Girdle connects the Lower Limb to the Torso. It is designed for stability more than mobility as it absorbs forces, and is the broadest bone in the body for the stresses of weight bearing and locomotion. It also protects the pelvic organs.
Includes: Hip or pelvic bones
What bones are to be considered part of the Lower Limb?
Femur, Fibula, Tibia, Patella, Tarsus, Metatarsals, Phalanges
