Anatomy of a Long Bone Flashcards
Diaphysis
Shaft/body of the bone. It is a hollow cylinder with walls of compact bone.
Epiphyses
The extremities (ends) of the bone which is filled with red marrow.
Metaphysis
The region where the Dyaphysis joins the Epiphysis. This includes the Epiphyseal plate.
Epiphyseal Plate
A region of thick hyaline cartilage, also known as the growth plate.
Epiphyseal Line
The ossified epiphyseal plate after bone growth has ceased.
Articular Cartilage
The thin layer of hyaline cartilage covering the epiphysis in the joint.
Periosteum
Fibrous connective tissue (CT) on the surface of the bone, except at articular surfaces. Essential for growth, repair and nutrition. Also necessary for the attachment of ligaments and tendons.
Medullary/marrow cavity
The space within the diaphysis containing red or yellow marrow.
Endosteum
Layer of osteoblasts lining medullary cavity, contains scattered ostesclasts.
