skeletal system is divided into 2 divisions, which are:
Axial and appendicular
includes all endoskeletal structures located at the center or axis of the body
axial division
axial division is composed of:
skull, visceral skeleton, vertebral column and sternum
includes all endoskeletal located laterally or in the regions of the appendages or attached to the main axis
appendicular region
appendicular regions is composed of:
pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, forelimb, hindlimb
has a long longitudinal axis and expanded end
long bone
long bone examples are:
humerus, femur, and tibia
cube like with lenghts and width roughly equal
short bone
the spongy part is enclosed in a thin layer of compact bone
short bonee
examples of short bone are:
carpals, tarsals
platelike with broad surfaces of compact bone enclosing a layer of spongy bone
flat bone
serves as protection for organs as well as attachment of muscles
flat bone
examples of flat bone are:
skull, ribs, and scapula
type of bone with various shapes
irregular bonee
examples of irregular bones are:
vertebrae and sacrum
