Why is it used?
to elect representatives in large multi member constituency
Process
voters rank candidates in order of preference
once the droop quota is reached the left over is redistributed to the other candidates
Droop Quota
to be elected for a seat, the candidates need to reach a quota
What happens if no candidates have enough votes after the first counting?
candidates are eliminated and their votes redistributed to the other
Advantages
gives a proportional outcome
greater choice
- in the same party too
leads to coalition govs
helped the unionist and republicans share power in Northern Ireland
Disadvantages
counting process is long and complicated
multi member constituencies weakens the link between public and representative
produce unstable coalitions
- give minor parties the balance of power
NI gov has collapsed multiple times
