What were caravanserai?
1) They provided a safe place to stay overnight
2) They had food and water supplies which meant that travellers only had to carry food and water for the upcoming day as they knew they would be able to refuel at the next caravanserai.
3) They had an area for the camels and horses.

Why were camels used on the Silk Roads instead of horses?
1) Their hooves are in a much better shape and can withstand much harder surfaces.
2) They can withstand very high and very low temperatures.
3) They can hold weight up to 200kg
4) They have lots of fat in their humps which significantly reduces how frequently you have to feed them.
