The Shoulder Joint Flashcards
Supraspinatus Function
initiates and assists deltoid in abduction of the arm
compresses humerus superiorly (keeps humerus form gliding inferiorly during abduction)
Subscapularis
internal rotation
depresses humeral head
Infraspinatus
external rotation
depresses humeral head
Teres Minor
external rotation
depresses humeral head
Long Head of Biceps
flexion and supination
Hawkins Kennedy Test
subacromial impingement
90 degrees shoulder and elbow flexion
forcefully IR
Speeds Test
impingement; long head of the biceps
arm flexed to 90 degrees; elbow extended; forearm full ER
apply downward force as patient resists
Yeargason Test
impingement; humeral ligament holding biceps tendon in bicipital groove
elbow flexed to 90; palpate bicipital groove
apply force into pronation and elbow extension
Neer Test
subacromial impingement
stabilize scapula; arm in neutral rotation
passively elevate patient’s arm in neutral rotation
Lift Off
subscapularis RC pathology
passively bring arm into max IR behind back then extend arm 20 degrees
patient holds position while PT releases
Belly Press
subscapularis RC pathology
patient stands with arm on abdomen
PT passively puts arm in max IR by bringing elbow forward
patient holds position while PT releases
Lag Sign at 90 degrees
teres minor RC pathology
arm abducted to 90 degrees in scapular plane; PT supports arm at elbow
passively ER to end range then release
Lag Sign at 45 degrees
infraspinatus RC pathology
arm abducted to 45 degrees in scapular plane; PT supports arm at elbow
passively ER to end range then release
Full Can vs Empty Can
supraspinatus RC pathology
arm elevated just below 90 degrees in scapular plane; stabilize superior shoulder
apply downward force as patient resists
Infraspinatus Muscle Test
rotator cuff pathology/tear
arm at side with elbow bent; push arm into IR as patient resists
