the short term memory Flashcards
who made the working memory model (WMM) and when?
Baddeley and Hitch in 1974
what is the role of the central executive?
-boss of the WMM
-controls attention and directs information to the 2 slave systems
-can process information from any sensory modality.
what are the 2 slave systems in the working memory model?
the phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketch pad
what is the role of the phonological loop?
a temporary storage system for verbal information
what 2 components are in the phonological loop?
the articulatory control system and the phonological store
what does the articulatory control system allow for?
allows for subvocal repetition of acoustic information
what is the phonological store (+ what is its capacity)?
a temporary storage space for coding acoustic information
- has a limited capacity
what is the role of the visuo-spatial sketch pad?
temporary storage system for visuo and spatial information
what are the 2 components of the visio-spatial sketch pad?
inner scribe and visual cache
what is the role of the inner scribe?
to deal with metal images
what is the role of the visual cache (+what is its capacity)?
codes visual and spatial information
- has a limited capacity
when was the episodic buffer introduced?
year 2000
what is the role of the episodic buffer?
binds and intergrades information from all components and passed it into the LTM
-codes visual and acoustic information
-has a limited capacity
what case study supports the WMM?
case study of KF
what happened to KF?
-injured in motorcycle incident
-after accident he was able to recall stores information from his LTM but had issues with his STM
what was KF able to remember and not remember?
able to remember visual images (e.g. faces) but not acoustic information (sounds)
what does the case study of KF suggest?
suggests there is 2 types of information in the STM one for visual information and one for acoustic information
what does KF case study support?
supports 2 slave systems and the idea of multi component STM system.
what is one issue with the WMM?
it only focuses on STM and the link between WMM and the LTM is not fully explained.
what does the WMM provide detail on?
detailed description of our STM
what does the WMM provide no information on?
provides no information on how information is processed and transferred from our STM to our LTM and back again .
as a result of this what is the WMM?
incomplete model of memory as it needs other theories/models to be able to gain a complete picture of it.
what does research examining the WMM often demonstrate?
experimental reductionism
how does research examining the WMM demonstrate experimental reductionism?
as it attempts to examine behaviour by relying on individual variables operationalised in laboratory experiments
