evaluating the long term memory Flashcards
what do brain scans provide for explanation of the long term memory?
brain scans provide research for different types of LTM as it shows different parts of the brain are active when accessing episodic, semantic and procedural memory.
what part of the brain is episodic memory associated with (shown by brain scans)?
associated with the hippocampus and temporal lobe
what part of the brain is semantic memory associated with (shown by brain scans)?
associated with the temporal lobe
what part of the brain is procedural memory associated with (shown by brain scans)?
associated with the cerebellum and motor cortex
where does support for distinction between implicit and explicit memory (LTM) come from?
comes from case study of HM
what happened in case study of HM?
-suffered from severe epilepsy
- got hippocampus removed to alleviate symptoms
-his STM remained in tact but unable to transfer certain types of information to his LTM
what did Milner discover through case study HM?
discover that HM was able to learn implicit (procedural) tasks but not explicit information (episodic+semantic)
what was HM able to learn?
able to learn mirror tracing task and retain skill without forgetting
what was HM able to learn?
able to learn mirror tracing task and retain skill without forgetting
what was HM able to demonstrate through his behaviour despite not being able to recall?
able to demonstrate procedural memory through implicit behaviour despite being able to recall experience explicitly
what is another case study that supports idea that there is different types of long term memory?
Clive wearing
what happened to Clive Wearing?
following a brain infection his procedural memory remained intact (able to play piano+dress himself) but his episodic memory (life time experiences) was severely damaged
what could it be argued about the case studies?
that they are a socially sensitive subject and there should be protection in place such as how HMs identity was hidden till his death in 2008.
