The Sexual Self Flashcards
It refers to how one thinks about themself as a sexual individual. It speaks of your sexual health, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression and values around your sexuality.
SEXUAL SELF

is biological
- it is classified as male, female, or intersex where there are reproductive differences based on genitalia, chromosomes, and hormones
SEX
(SEX VS GENDER)
Refers to social or cultural distinctions associated with a given sex.
- Generally considered to be a socially constructed concept.
GENDER
is what is inside us;
how we feel about our own gender.
GENDER IDENTITY
(BINARY VS NON-BINARY)
If you don’t identify exclusively with being a male or a female, and instead feel like you fit somewhere between the two, you might identify with being ‘___’. Many cultures have broader ideas around gender than just ‘male’ or ‘female’, and have done so for a very long time.
NON-BINARY - An umbrella term for a person who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that is neither entirely male nor entirely female.

Identifying and/or presenting as neither specifically masculine nor feminine.
Androgynous
(BINARY VS NON-BINARY)
- One who embraces fluidity of gender identity.
Gender Fluid
(BINARY VS NON-BINARY)
- One who does not identify as a particular gender.
Agender
(BINARY VS NON-BINARY)
- One whose physical or behavioral characteristics do not correspond to the traditional expectations of their gender.
Gender Non-Conforming
(BINARY VS NON-BINARY)
- One who does not identify with a single fixed gender.
Genderqueer
(CISGENDER VS TRANSGENDER)
- Describe a person whose gender identity and gender expression align with sex assigned at birth.
CISGENDER
(CISGENDER VS TRANSGENDER)
- Umbrella term used to describe the full range of people whose gender identity and/or gender role do not conform to what is typically associated with their sex assigned at birth.
Individuals in this category may feel as if they are in the wrong gender, but this perception may or may not correlate with a desire for surgical or hormonal reassignment.
TRANSGENDER
is about who you are attracted to, sexually and romantically.
This is also called your sexual orientation where one’s physical attraction and emotional attraction overlap.
SEXUALITY
refers to the characteristics of a person that might make you physically or sexually attracted to them.
PHYSICAL ATTRACTION
relates to the characteristics of a person that might make you emotionally or romantically attracted to them.
EMOTIONAL ATTRACTION

A woman who is primarily attracted to women.
LESBIAN

A man who is primarily attracted to men; sometimes a broad term for individuals primarily attracted to the same sex.
GAY

An individual attracted to people of their own and opposite gender.
BISEXUAL

A person whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.
TRANSGENDER

An outdated term that originated in the medical and psychological communities for people who have permanently changed their gender identity through surgery and hormones.
TRANSEXUAL

An umbrella term to be more inclusive of the many identities and variations that make up the LGBTQ+ community.
QUEER

The process of exploring and discovering one’s own sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression.
QUESTIONING

An individual whose sexual anatomy or chromosomes do not fit with the traditional markers of “female” and “male”.
INTERSEX
(TYPES OF SEXUAL ORIENTATION - LGBTTQQIAAP)
Typically a non-queer person who supports and advocates for the queer community; an individual within the LGBTQ+ community can be an ally for another member that identifies differently than them.
