The Science of Psychology Flashcards
What are the different types of observations?
Naturalistic, Laboratory & Case Study
What are the limitations of Descriptive Methods?
Naturalistice,Laboratory & Case Study (applies all)
Observer bias, no cause and effect
What is the limitation of Naturalistic Observation?
Waiting for an event to happen
What is the limitation of Laboratory Observations?
Loss of spontaneity, Hawthorne effect
What is the limitation of Case Studies?
Limited sample size, low generalizability, Hawthorne effect
What is a correlation?
Involves measuring and determining the relation between 2 variables
What is positive correlation?
As one variable goes up, the other does too (e.g. studying and grades)
What is Negative Correlations?
Increase in one variable and a decrease in another (e.g. more studying, less stress)
Why Correlation Studies?
You have access to 2 pieces of information but may not be able to manipulate the variables. often - first sept in the inferential process
What is the difference between independent vs dependent variables?
Independent - experimenter manipulates
Dependent - variables measured
What are the variables in an experiment?
Independent, dependent, extraneous
What are Design Considerations?
Selection Bias, Experimenter Bias, Placebo
What is the cure for selection bias?
Random selection/assignment
What is the cure for experimenter bias?
Double Blind
What is the cure for placebo?
Exposure control group
