The s-block elements Flashcards
1
Q
What are the anomalous properties of Lithium (w.r.t Alkali metals)?
A
- Exceptionally small size of its atom and ion
- High polarising power. As a result, there is increased covalent character of lithium compounds which is responsible for their solubility in organic solvents.
- Lithium shows diagonal relationship to magnesium.
2
Q
Difference between Lithium and Other Alkali metals
A
- Lithium is much harder. Its m.p. and b.p. are higher than the other alkali metals.
- Lithium is least reactive but the strongest reducing agent among all the alkali metals.
3
Q
Similarities between Lithium and Magnesium
A
- Lithium and Magnesium are harder and lighter than other elements in their respective groups.
- Lithium and magnesium react slowly with water.
- The oxides, Li2O and MgO do not combine with excess oxygen to give any superoxide.
- Both LiCl and MgCl2 are soluble in ethanol.

Q
Formula of Washing Soda
A
Washing Soda also known as Sodium Carbonate.
It’s formula is Na2CO3.10H2O
