Fall of Carthage
With Carthage and Greece conquered, Rome becomes the sole superpower in the Mediterranean world, a distinction it will continue to hold for approximately the next 600 years.
Dictator
a magistrate of the Roman Republic, entrusted with the full authority of the state to deal with a military emergency or to undertake a specific duty. All other magistrates were subordinate to his imperium, and the right of the plebeian tribunes to veto his actions or of the people to appeal from them was extremely limited. In order to prevent the dictatorship from threatening the state itself, severe limitations were placed upon its powers, as a dictator could only act within his intended sphere of authority, and was obliged to resign his office once his appointed task had been accomplished, or at the expiration of six months
Pompey the Great
celebrated 3 different victories on 3 different continents in 1 year. Built a huge theater for the people and got around the ban by putting a victory temple on top.

aristocrats. there were a handful of rich families that would spend their lives in politics and priesthoods.
Client patron relationship
rich guys wanted as many clients as possible. Plebs wake up to greet patron and ask for favor (salutatio). the clients then follow the patron to the forum for visual clout. They would also vote and campaign for him.

Formulaic greeting in the morning from client to patron. Then ask for favor
consul
he highest elected political office of the Roman Republic (509 to 27 BC), and ancient Romans considered the consulship the highest level of the cursus honorum (an ascending sequence of public offices to which politicians aspired). Each year, the citizens of Rome elected two consuls to serve jointly for a one-year term. The consuls alternated in holding fasces each month when both were in Rome and a consul’s imperium extended over Rome and all its provinces.
There were two consuls in order to create a check on the power of any individual.

Roman General. First dictator for life. resigned after a few years. 80 BC. dictators were becoming popular

Pompey the great, Julius Ceaser and Crassus decided that they wanted to rule Rome together

Ides of march. assassanation of Julius Ceaser by Pompey supporters of the senate. He is killed at the back of Pompey’s theater. The area is turned into a latrine by Augustus.
