What is a patrician?
A patrician was a ranking in the social classes of Ancient Rome. Patricians were ranked right below the emperor and his family, they were leaders in politics, they were wealthy land owners, provided the military, and religion. These people lived in luxury.
What are paterfamilias?
Roman families were set up in the style of a pyramid with the father and any other male in the family are at the top meaning he was the absolute ruler of the family, women were located at the bottom of the pyramid.
What is the Senate?
The Senate is an assembly of citizens that join together in gatherings to pass laws for a nation or society, such as the Roman Senate. The Senate was constructed out of 300 men from the upper classes.
What are the Plebians?
The Plebians are common citizens of Rome. In the beginning there was limited rights for the citizens such as they could not become citizens, excluded from public offices, and could not marry into the patrician class.
What are the Twelve Tables?
The Twelve Tables are the first written expressions of Roman law. Before the Roman law was created many citizens were concerned that they did not know their own rights.
What is an Aqueduct?
An aqueduct created by the Romans is an artificial waterway designed to carry water from one place to another.
What is inflation?
Inflation is when the general level of prices begin to increase and the value of money decreases.
What are Vaults and Arches?
Vaults and Arches are a type of roman architecture arches were a huge part of roman history, arches were everywhere especially in their colosseums. Vaults were dome like passage ways that normally lead to the basements of the colosseums where the animals, gladiators, and slaves were kept.
What is Latin?
Latin was a language that was commonly spoken throughout the Roman citizens and is now a dead language meaning that it is no longer a spoken language.
What is an Emperor?
An Emperor is a male leader of an empire or a ruler who has total power in a country or region, a female leader would be recognized as empress.
What are Bribes?
Bribes were common in Rome, bribes were used to defend themselves from other tribes from crossing the borders and attacking them. With the bribes Rome was giving the tribes it ended up equalling the payroll of a Roman soldier.
What is General Welfare?
General Welfare was when the politicians and emperors would often times provide food as a way of keeping the lower classes happy during the period of the republic when the state provided free or low-cost grain to the poor.
Who is Diocletian?
Diocletian was a Roman emperor who ruled from 284-305 CE, he is known for having reorganized the empire after a period of instituting the last Roman persecutions of Christians. He used to share power with Maximian.
Who is Constantine?
Constantine was the first Roman emperor to proclaim himself a Christian and to legalize Christianity.
What or Who are the Barbarians?
The barbarians are one of the many Germanic tribes who were attacking Rome. It is a term that means a person who lacks elegance, knowledge, of artistic or literary culture or otherwise known as “men with beards.” They trained men to be apart of the Roman empire for free thus the Roman army was mostly Barbarians.
