What was the Motherhood Medal?
On Hitler’s Mother’s birthday (12th August) medals were awarded to women with large families.
5 children - Bronze
6 children - Silver
8 children - gold
What was the Lebensborn programme?
The Life Springs Programme was where specially chosen, unmarried women could donate a baby to the Fuhrer by becoming pregnant by ‘racially pure’ SS men
What were the ‘Three K’s’?
Instead of going to work, women were asked to stick to the three ‘Ks’
KINDER, KUCHE & KIRCHE
(children) (kitchen) (church)
What was the usual appearance for woman?
They were encouraged to keep healthy and wear their hair in a bun or plaits.
They were discouraged from wearing trousers, high heels or makeup and dyeing or styling their hair and from slimming.
What were schoolgirls taught about jobs?
They were trained for work at home and discouraged from going on to higher education.
What year could women work again and why?
They could work again in 1937 because most of the men were going to work in the army.
What was the compulsory ‘duty year’?
Compulsory duty meant going to work on a farm or in a family household. In return, they would receive bed and board but no pay. N.B By 1939 there were fewer working women than under the Weimar Republic.
What were the marriage loans?
These loans were given to help young people get married. They were allowed to keep one quarter of the loan for each child born (obviously up to four children)
