The Role Of The Father Flashcards
Who are the two researchers who did research into the role of the father?
Grossman and Field
Describe Grossmans aim into his research into the role of the father?
Grossman carried out a longitudinal study looking at both parents bhv and its rs to the quality of childrens att into their teens
What were Grossmans first finding and conclusion?
- He found that the quality of infants att with mothers was related to childrens att in teens, but not fathers. Suggesting the fathers att is less important.
What was Grossmans second finding and conclusion?
- However the quality of fathers play with infants was related to the quality of childrens teens att. Suggesting fathers have a diff role in att to do with play and stimulation, which is important for childs wellbeing, and less to do with nurturing.
Who did research to contradict Grossmans research and what was his aim and method?
Field investigated the role of the father in att using a controlled obsv.
What was Fields procedure?
He filmed infants in face to face interactions with primary cg mothers, primary cg fathers and secondary caregiver fathers
What was Fields findings?
Primary cg mothers and fathers spent more time smiling, imitating and holding infants compared to secondary cg fathers. These bhvs seems to be more important in building an att to an infant.
What were Fields conclusions?
Fathers can infact be the more nurturing att figure and take on a traditional maternal role. The key to the att rs is level of responsiveness, not gender of the parent.
What are the three AO3 points to evaluate the role of the father?
