The emotional and intellectual consequences of extended seperation bw a child their mother figure, where a child loses an aspect of care within a critical period

- bowlby suggested continued nurture from a mother figure within first 2.5 years of life is important for healthy psychological development
- however if a child has extended seperation bw mother within critical period where an element of care is lost, then psychological damage such as intellectual or emotional, is inevitable and irreversible

- intellectual damage includes cognitive impairment such as intellectual delay shown by abn low IQ
- lower IQ was found in children who had remained in institutions compared to those who has been fostered due to less emotional care
