The Rock Cycle Flashcards
What are the three major types of rock?
- Igneous
- Metamorphic
- Sedimentary
What type of rock is Igneous rock?
very impure. comes from the root word “ignite” molten rock. When it is under the earth’s surface we call it “magma” but when it erupts (like from a volcano) its called lava. It can either hit ground or water but when it hits the earths surface it hardest quickly. Rocks that have alot of impurities are Igneous rocks- like granite, wind, rain, things get broken down.
What is Metamorphic rock?
they get baked by pressure for long periods of time, are very PURE like a diamond. can heat up and become igneous
What is a sedimentary rock?
sand or sandstone rock pieces get carried away by wind and deposited in beds- we call them sedimentary rocks in sedimentary rock beds. The deeper the rock is, the older it is new ones are placed on top. If there is a shift, or they don’t aline, that means there was a fault shift in the layers.
What is interesting about rock types?
any of the rock types can change and become other rock types over time.
