Plate Tectonics Flashcards
What supports the theory of plate tectonics?
- Seafloor spreading (we can see continents moving apart)
- Fossil records
- Shifting plates (that causes earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building)
What are the three different fault types (types of movement of plates)
- Convergent
- Divergent
- Transform
What is Convergent type of plate movement?
plates push together, get mountain building, pushing upward.
What is Divergent type of moving plates (fault types)?
plates pulling apart, happens on sea floor often.
What is “transform” type of plate movement?
plates sliding past each other.
What factor would cause more harmful plate movement/waves to the earth? (Not increasing the movement, but increase the damage done?)
If you have hard ground, plate movement passes through easier- but soft ground there is more damage done from waves (earthquake)
soft materials- it jars up and down more. along the shore line it takes more damage, softer ground.
