The Rise of Nazism and Hitler - Part Three of Germany 1890-1945 Flashcards

1
Q

Why were Nazis popular in the countryside?

A

Farmers had been hit hard by the Great Depression, people hadnโ€™t bought as many of their foods and farmers began to lower their prices. This wasnโ€™t helped by the Weimar government, the Nazi party had promised farmers higher prices for their crops, a better quality of life and higher status in a Nazified Germany. The nazis also hated communism, which posed a severe threat to farmers, who wanted to take their land, whereas the Nazis promised generational wealth for farmers and status.

Q

Why did the middle class like Hitler?

A

Small business owners, bank workers, doctors and managers had their wages cut during the depression and blamed Weimar for the failure. They feared that the communists could lead to a break down in law and order and that it could damage their way of life. They saw the Weimar government as too bureaucratic and the Nazis promised to fix this. The discipline and staunch anti-communist beliefs gained their support.

A

Hitler was a former soldier who knew the value of a powerful army and navy, he promised to tear up the Treaty of Versailles signed by the weak Weimar Republic and make Germany strong once more, many Germans wanted to be part of Germanyโ€™s bright future and get jobs in the armed forces or building new homes, motorways and hospitals. Q

What was the role of Stormtroopers after the September 1930 election?

A

The SA beat up communists and disrupted their meetings, making it hard for them to campaign freely. Other political groups had their own SA. The Reichsbanner supported both the Social Democrats and the Centre Party and regularly clashed with the Nazis. In 1932 alone, there were dozens of bomb plots, streets flights and murders as different groups fought.
