The Rise of Nazism and Hitler - Part Three of Germany 1890-1945 Flashcards
Why were Nazis popular in the countryside?
Farmers had been hit hard by the Great Depression, people hadnโt bought as many of their foods and farmers began to lower their prices. This wasnโt helped by the Weimar government, the Nazi party had promised farmers higher prices for their crops, a better quality of life and higher status in a Nazified Germany. The nazis also hated communism, which posed a severe threat to farmers, who wanted to take their land, whereas the Nazis promised generational wealth for farmers and status.
Why were the Nazis popular with certain women?
They said that family life, good morals, good morals and self-discipline and modesty were important. Some women agreed when Hitler said that โour youth have been exposed to a flood of muck and filth in word and print, in the theatre and in the cinemaโ The nazis promised that this would change.
Why did the middle class like Hitler?
Small business owners, bank workers, doctors and managers had their wages cut during the depression and blamed Weimar for the failure. They feared that the communists could lead to a break down in law and order and that it could damage their way of life. They saw the Weimar government as too bureaucratic and the Nazis promised to fix this. The discipline and staunch anti-communist beliefs gained their support.
Why did Hitler appeal to many young people?
Hitler was a former soldier who knew the value of a powerful army and navy, he promised to tear up the Treaty of Versailles signed by the weak Weimar Republic and make Germany strong once more, many Germans wanted to be part of Germanyโs bright future and get jobs in the armed forces or building new homes, motorways and hospitals. People were won over by the sheer force of his beliefs.
Why did the upper classes support Hitler and the Nazis?
They supported them on key issues, they promised the wealthy classes strong leadership and a more powerful nation, like under the Kaiser. Hitler promised to allow them to run factories how they wanted and his plans to use their weapons, battleships and fighter planes mean they might make even more money. The nazis would fight communism too, protecting their business.
What happened in the 1930 Reichstag election?
A year after the depression, unemployment was rampant, as usual a coalition government was formed since there wasnโt a majority, Heinrich Brรผning, a centre party politician, became chancellor. He wasnโt popular as he reduced unemployment pay and increased taxes across the board. Hitler was hoping to get 50 or so seats in the Reichstag, gained far more than that Nazi Party in Reichstag.
What did the Nazis do after their success in the September 1930 election?
They put up millions of propaganda posters and Hitler made speeches restating his views to more and more people.
What was the role of Stormtroopers after the September 1930 election?
The SA beat up communists and disrupted their meetings, making it hard for them to campaign freely. Other political groups had their own SA. The Reichsbanner supported both the Social Democrats and the Centre Party and regularly clashed with the Nazis. In 1932 alone, there were dozens of bomb plots, streets flights and murders as different groups fought.
Apart from the political clashes and lack of action, why else did people think the Weimar government was failing?
Hindenburg was using Article 48 to exercise power without the consent of the Reichstag whilst the Reichstag was stuck in Bureaucracy.
What happened during the 1932 election?
After Brรผningโs resignation in July 1932, Hindenburg appointed another centre politician, Franz Von Papen, he didnโt have enough support and because of this another election was held and the Nazis gained the majority of seats.

What did Von Papen do after being given emergency powers?
He called another election and the Nazis became the largest party again, and Von Papen resigned.
What did Hindenburg do after Von Papen resigned?
He refused to make Hitler chancellor and made Von Schleicher, a friend of his, chancellor.
What did Von Schleicher do after becoming chancellor?
He had no support and couldnโt pass laws, so he resigned.
What did Hindenburg do on the 30th January 1933?
He finally gave the chancellorship to Hitler, but limited his power as he made Von Papen Vice Chancellor and limited the number of Nazis in the cabinet. He thought he could control Hitler.
