What happened at the end of WW1?
• Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany had been overthrown.
• Germany was no longer ruled by a king, and became a republic.
• A new democratic government was form in the city of Weimar.
• The government of the Weimar Republic signed the armistice with the Allies and agreed to stop fighting.
The Treaty of Versailles
After the armistice was signed, a meeting of the leaders of the countries that won the war discussed and wrote down a Peace Treaty. The Peace Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919.
Who wanted Germany to pay and why?
The countries which won the war wanted revenge on Germany. They wanted the country to pay for the damage caused to their countries during the war.
What was Germany’s punishment in the Treaty of Versailles?
• Germany had no saw in how it was punished, thus the Peace Treaty dictated Germany.
• Germany had to pay millions in damages/ reparations.
• Germany lost land.
• The country had to sign the War Guilt Cause, admitting that it was to blame for the war.
• Germany was not allowed to build up a defence force again.
