the reichstag fire
-on 27th February 1933, the reichstag was burned down
-the nazis blamed a dutch communist called Marinus Der Lubbe
-this allowed hitler to bypass emergency decree which suspended the weimar constitution
-thousands of communists arrested after the fire

1933 German election
-nazi party won 43.9 percent
-DNVPwon 7.9 percent
-in weimar sytem of proportional representation a coalition of parties needed over 50 percent to rule
-the nazi DNVP got 51.9 percent
the enabling act
-this meant hitler could make any law without putting it through the reichstag first
-the reichstag supported the enabling act with 444 to 94, hitlers sa threatened opposition mp’s
after the enabling act parliament could no longer stop hitler meaning germany was no longer a democracy
single party state in nazi germany
-on the 14th July 1933, all parties were banned except from the nazis
-after this, all political opposition was removed
trade unions
in may 1933, trade union leaders were arrested and sent to concentration camsp
-after this, all trade unions were banned and all workers were forced to join the German labour front (DAF)
the night of the long knives
-on the 30th June 1934, hitler used the SS to purge of SA members
-400 SA members were killed
-`Rohm was arrested and then later killed and hitler killed former chancellor von schleicher
-there was now no internal opposition(in the nazi party) to hitler
-Rohm his most powerful threat was dead
why did the night of the long knives happen?
-removing opposition, (Rohm and schleicher)
-secure the support of general Werner von blomberg
-on the 9th April 1934,aboad a German battleship, historians believe that blomberg agreed to support hitler as the leader of germany after hindenburg if the SA power was reduced and grew the German army under blomberg
hitler becomes Fuhrer
-in august 1934, president hindenburg died
-hitler merged the roles of president and chancellor together and created the role of Fuhrer
-hitler called this regime the ‘third reich’ which he believed would last 1,000 years
loyalty in the third reich
-loyalty was shown through the ‘heil hitler’ salute
-hitler forced the army to swear an oath of allegiance to him personally and not germany itself
-on the 2nd august 1934, blomberg added a new oath to the German army, swearing allegiance to the furrier
control of local government
-provinces called gaue were all run by a Gauleiter, who was a nazi trusted by hitler
-each Gauleiter reported to reichsleiters who then reported to hitler
-goebbels was a Reichsleiter focused on propaganda
-in 1934, the law of reconstruction of the reich, gave hitler total control of local governments
