Q

When do earthquakes occur and how?

A

They occur when there is plate movement along plate boundaries.
When the rocks can no longer withstand the increasing stress they can suddenly slip many metres, causing an earthquake

Q

Richter scale

A

Used to measure the magnitude of the earthquake
Each increasing magnitude on the richter scale is 10 times greater in magnitude than the previous one.
strongest earthquake is 9.5 on the richter scale in valdivia child
