The Respiratory System Flashcards
One of two branches off the trachea that leads to the lungs
Bronchial tube or bronchus
Where mouth and nasal passages meet
Pharynx
Watery layer surrounding the lungs
Pleura
Contains vocal chords and voice box
Larynx
Tube that connects the larynx to the lungs
Trachea
Some shaped muscle below the lungs that contracts and relaxes to allow breathing
Diaphragm
Smaller tubes branching of the bronchi leading to the alveoli
Bronchiole
Brings blood to lungs to pick up oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
Capillaries
Tiny air sacs in the lungs that fill with CO2
Alveoli
Allows air to enter
Nose
Where nasal and mouth passageways meet, leads to esophagus and trachea
Pharynx
Causes the airways of the lungs to swell leading to wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness
Asthma
Gradually damages the alveoli, making it progressively difficult to breathe, generally caused by smoking
Emphysema
Lung inflammation caused by bacteria or virus, alveoli may fill with puss
Pneumonia
Inflammation of the mucus membrane on the bronchial tubes, causes coughing and bronchospasms
Bronchitis
