Religious changes since 1530s
Before 1530s England was a Catholic country
Henry VIII - Protestant
In early 1530s, he broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and made the Church of England with himself as Head
Edward VI - Protestant, tried to make English Church more Protestant.
Mary I - devout Catholic, made England Catholic again, restored Pope as head of the church and removed Edward’s reforms.
Protestants were harshly prosecuted (over 280 executed)
Elizabeth’s religion
Had been raised as Protestant
Deeply religious
Wanted to end constant religious changes and create religious settlement
Act of supremacy
Henry and Edward used title ‘Supreme Head of the Church of England’, Elizabeth used ‘Supreme Governor of English Church’
Gave her control of Church but did not call her ‘head’ so satisfied those who thought a woman couldn’t lead the church
Act of uniformity - moderate Protestant reforms
Going to church was compulsory - fines for missing services
New Book of Common Prayer issued that had to be used in all churches
All parishes had to have a copy of the Bible in English
Act of Uniformity- Concessions to English Catholics
Wording of Communion vague so it could be accepted by Protestants and Catholics
Churches allowed to keep some decoration
Priests had to wear Catholic vestments (robes)
