Who was Mary Queen of Scots?

A

Only child of James V of Scotland, granddaughter of Margaret Tudor (Henry VIII’s sister)
Had a strong claim to English throne
Catholic, many English Catholics supported her claim to the throne
Became Queen of Scotland in 1542 when she was 6 days old (her mother ruled on her behalf)
Raised in France
1558 - at 15 she married heir to French throne, he died in 1560, she returned to Scotland

Mary fled to England in 1568

A

1565- married Lord Darnley, unhappy marriage
1566- thought she was having an affair with David Rizzio, stabbed him to death
1567- Darnley murdered - Mary and Earl of Bothwell were accused of the murder
Mary married Bothwell a few months later, unpopular marriage
Scottish nobles rebel, imprison Mary, force her to abdicate, make James, her son, king
1568- Mary escaped from prison and raised an army, forces defeated, fled to England

A

Mary thought Elizabeth would help her regain Scotland - instead she imprisoned her, inquiry to investigate he involvement in Darnley’s murder
Inquiry did not reach a verdict- continue to imprison Mary
