When the church demanded that people pay money in order to have their sins forgiven.
Why was the development of the Printing Press important?
It allowed Martin Luther’s protestant ideas to spread quickly (before the printing press, books were copied by hand)
Why did the Protestants want the Bible printed in English?
So everyone could understand their religion and this should reduce the power of the priests.
What scary natural event happened to Martin Luther and what was the impact on his life?
A nasty storm made him commit his life to be a priest if God saved him from the storm.
Why was Martin Luther so scared of dying?
He didn’t believe he had earned his way to heaven yet.

He told the judge he was following his religious conscience (given to him by God) and therefore he would not take back what he said.
What was the result of Luther’s trial
He was declared an outlaw and went on the run.
Where did Luther hide after his trial?
In his friends Castle in Germany.
What does Luther do while in hiding?
He translates the Bible into German
Why does translating the bible make a big difference to the relationship between ordinary people and their priests.
Because now people don’t have to rely on their priests to understand their religion which takes away a lot of the priests power.
What happens as the end result of Luther translating the Bible?
The church split in 2 - Catholics and Protestants
