The Reaction of Acids Flashcards
What is the word equation for magnesium reacting with hydrochloric acid?
Magnesium + hydrochloric acid —> magnesium chloride + hydrogen.
What is the word equation for acid reacting with metal?
acid + metal —> metal salt + hydrogen.
What is the word equation for acid reacting with metal oxide (base)?
acid + metal oxide —> metal salt + water
What is the word equation for sulphuric acid reacting with copper oxide?
sulphuric acid + copper oxide —> copper sulphate + water
What is the word equation for acid reacting with alkali?
acid + alkali —> metal salt + water
What is the word equation for hydrochloric acid reacting with sodium hydroxide?
hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide —> sodium chloride + water
What is the word equation for acid reacting with a metal carbonate?
acid + metal carbonate —> metal salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the word equation for copper carbonate reacting with hydrochloric acid?
hydrochloric acid + copper carbonate —> copper chloride + water + carbon dioxide
What type of salt is made when hydrochloric acid is used in the reaction?
Hydrochloric acid makes salts called chlorides
What type of salt is made when sulphuric acid is used?
Sulphuric acid makes salts called sulphates.
What is a base?
A base is a substance that reacts with acids and neutralises them. They are usually metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metal carbonates and metal hydrogen carbonates.
What is an alkali?
An alkali is a base that dissolves in water.
What is the difference between a base and an alkali?
Bases don’t dissolve, alkalis do.
How would you obtain solid salt from a solution?
Leave the solution out and allow the liquid to evapourate, leaving behind salt crystals.
How do you test for hydrogen?
To test for hydrogen you must hold your finger over the test tube so that the gas doesn’t escape. Then take a lighted splint and hold it above the test tube once you have released your thumb. If there is a ‘pop’ hydrogen is present.
