Element, Mixtures And Compunds Flashcards
What is a compound?
A substance that contains two or more elements chemically bonded in fixed proportions by mass.
What is an element?
A substance that contains only one kind or atom.
What is a mixture?
A mixture contains two or more components (elements, molecules or compounds). They are not chemically bonded and are mixed in any proportions.
List 5 properties of metals.
Ductile (usually) - can stretched into a wire Electrical conductor (good) Malleable - can be hammered into shape Strong (most) Shiny (usually) Heat conductor (good) Sonorous Magnetic (most not) - iron, cobalt, nickel, alloys Melting point (high) (usually) Hardness (good) (usually)
List 5 properties of non metals.
Brittle (usually) easily broken Electrical conductor (bad) - insulators Heat conductor (bad) Melting point (low) Soft (usually)
Go on Oresome elements one time
You better have done this or put red and look dumb! Lol
What is the word equation for iron sulphide?
Iron + sulphur —> iron sulphide
What is the symbol equation for iron sulphide?
Fe + S —> FeS
Describe iron and sulphur as a mixture?
The mixture is easy to seperate.
The properties of the mixture were the same as the elements in it.
Describe iron and sulphur as a compound.
The compound is hard to separate.
The properties of the compound are different to the properties of the elements it is made from.
