The Rate and Extent of Chemical Changes Flashcards
Equation:
What does rate of reaction equal?
= amount of reactant used or product formed/
time
What are the different ways rate of reaction can be measured?
- Measuring amount of reactant used
- Measuring amount of product formed
- Measuring time taken for reaction mixture to change colour
HT:
What can the amount of reactant be measured in?
moles
HT:
what is the concentration of reactant measured in?
Mol/dm^3
Collision Theory:
What occurs when reacting particles collide with eachother with sufficient energy?
Chemical reactions
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy required to cause a reaction
Describe why Temperature is factor during the collision theory?
The hotter the particles the faster they move, meaning they collide more often creating larger amounts of energy
Describe why Concentration is factor during the collision theory?
- At higher concentration the particles closer together collide more often.
- Increasing pressure of reacting gases also increases frequency of particles
Describe why Surface Area is factor during the collision theory?
- Larger the surface area the less collision will take place
What is a catalyst
Is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction.
What does a catalyst do?
- Reduces amount of energy needed for a successful collision
- Makes more successful collisions
Give an example when needing to use a Catalyst?
when cracking hydrocarbons
What is a closed System?
Where no products are removed or reactants are added
HT:
What did Le Chateliers principle state?
that if a system is equilibrium its subject to change
HT:
What happens if temperature is lowered or raised in an exothermic reaction?
- Raised- yield decreases
- Lowered- yield increases
