The quest for prestige Flashcards
Prestige
Prestige is the reputation for power — R. Gilpin
Immaterial hallow around you regarding the influence you have. Then you can win without using power.
Status vs prestige
In literature, they use ‘status’ instead of ‘prestige’
Teacher’s interpretation: status is where you stand on the social ladder - prestige is what you in order to be somewhere.
Prestige according to liberals
Why get prestige according to liberals? To get accepted by other countries.
Status anxiety
When the status you believe you have is not the one you actually have. Maybe states don’t want to be the first one, but are comfortable being where they are.
Revisionist power
State that will never be okay being apart of the first but want to be the first and have the prestige it comes with it.
(In the western world, people believe that china is a revisionist power)
Insecurity in the quest for prestige
The quest for power is hard bc you can’t know what the other states want.
Ex: Ukraine war: war for prestige according to the teacher. Material interest? no. Quest for power? no. Quest for security? surely Russian believe so but going to war is not the solution.
J.Owen
Believes that China will try to build its own international order, but doesn’t they want to take out the liberal international order: we would have two international orders. Some say that we will get rid of the liberal international order as a whole.
