Democratic victory Flashcards
J.Locke, A.Hamilton, A.Tocqueville
Liberals believed that democracy as such were under favored when it comes to war -> A republic needs to become a temporary monarch otherwise it might lose.
D.Lake
Found that democracies were winning more wars than autocracies. They don’t take money from their own citizens → don’t have to invade others territories to be wealthy. They tend to ally with one another to face danger and autocracies.
Reiter & Stam, Democracies at war
Tried to show that democracies had a record of war, 80% of victory.
The selection effect: democracies have a better record at war because they choose easy ones to fight.
Battlefield effect: more efficient in their organization, democracies treat their prisoners of war well.
Within our democracies, we make people rely on initiative better than non democratic states: judgment call from soldiers.
M.Desch, A.Downes
If you look at the way democracies have won these wars, it was not compatible with democratic standards (launched in non democratic fashion → no deliberation, no higher legitimacy…).
Teacher’s own take
A democratic behavior must be redefined when it comes to war. The specificities of war making makes it almost impossible.
The prerogative are democratic or constitutional SO if their actions are conform to the prerogative, it is democratic.
What does democratic mean?
Adjective that can characterize a specific measure/ behavior → a democratic state can do something that is not democratic but remains a democracy.
