the psychodynamic approach Flashcards
what are Freud’s 3 key assumptions
- the unconscious mind is the driving force of behaviour
- instincts drive our behaviour
- early childhood makes us who we are (first 5 years)
the mind has 3 parts, which are…
the conscious, pre conscious and the unconscious
what are the 3 parts of the personality
id, ego and superego
when does the ego develop
18 months to 3 years
when does the superego develop
3 to 6 years
what are the 3 defence mechanisms
repression, denial and displacement
define repression
an unpleasant memory is pushed to the back of the unconscious mind and can no longer be reached, thus reducing anxiety
define denial
an individual refuses to accept reality of an unpleasant situation to reduce anxiety
define displacement
a strong emotion is expressed from a source of distress onto a neutral, substitute target
what are the psychosexual stages in order
oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital
what is the oepidus complex
a boy has intense feelings for his mother, has castration anxiety and so copies his father
what is the electra complex
a girl has penis envy and so replaces this desire with the desire for a child, and so copies her mother
