Ways that the protection of rights are similar?

A
  • Both US and UK legislatures have passed legislation to protect citizen’s rights, such as the UK’s Equality Act 2010 and the US Civil Rights Act 1964:
  • Equality Act 2010: law passed to bring together many different pieces of equality legislation, e.g. eqality pay act 1970, sex discrimination act 1975, race relations act 1976
  • Civil Rights Act 1964: banned racial discrimination in voting, prohibited voting restrictions
  • Both have independent judiciaries who defend the rights
  • Rule of law applies to both countries

  • Entrenched rights in the US can only be removed by a formal amendment, whereas civil liberties and rights are not entrenched in the UK
  • US SC has far more power to protext civil rights than the UK SC does
