most immigrants came from Southern and Eastern Europe - Russia, Poland, Italy and Spain.

an anti immigrant attitude idea that your native country needs to be protected against immigrants
Muckraker
a journalist or an author who searches for and exposes shocking situations
Tenement
Rental units that often consisted of only one room; usually in crowded, unsanitary, run-down buildings.
