Q

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) or ‘language-led dementias’ were not always recognised as PPA in history, from as far back as the 19th century by professionals such as Pick, Head and Serieux. What else were PPA commonly appreciated as?

A
  • Semantic dementia was described by Warrington (QJEP 1975) as transcortical sensory aphasia + visual agnosia
  • Mesulam (Ann Neurol 1982) described them as ‘slowly progressive aphasia without generalised dementia’

These are two main scientific discoveries which have largely developed and led to the understanding of PPA.

When assessing an individual for PPA, what areas relating to the analysis of spontaneous speech should you gather information on?

A

NEED TO FINISH THE ANSWER

  1. Generating a message - verbal thought
  2. The sense of the message - conceptual consent and vocabulary
  3. The structure of the message - grammar and phonology
