The poisons act and COSHH Flashcards
What is COSHH
the control of substances hazardous to health.
-considers any special arrangements required to ensure safe handling
what is CLP
classification, labelling and packaging of chemicals
what is included in the CLP
-hazard pictograms
-signal words
-precautionary statements
what are some signal words used on labels to identify the substance as hazardous and what are they grouped in
grouped in: environmental, health and physical
Physical: explosive
Environmental: hazardous to the aquatic environment
health: skin corrosion
what are some hazard statements included on labels that identify it as hazardous
-causes serious eye damage
-toxic if swallowed
what is a hazard statement
statement used to show the degree and nature of the hazard of the substance
what is a precautionary statement
action to take to minimise/prevent the effects of the hazardous substance
what are some examples of precautionary statements
-wear safety goggles
-do not eat or drink
what is a hazard word
a signal word to show how the chemical can cause harm
what should a label include
-supplier info (name, address, number)
-product info (quantity, etc,)
-where applicable: hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard statements and precautionary statements
what is REACH
Stands for registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemicals.
-system of controlling chemicals within Europe
what is a safety data sheet
document with information on how to deal with a chemical safely, the hazards and what to do in an emergency
what are COSHH regulations
It protects workers from exposure to hazardous substances by:
-conduct risk assessments
-identify health hazards
-providing training, info and instructions
how do you eliminate the risk of exposure of hazardous substances
-eliminate the harmful product and use a safer one
-use a safer form of the product e.g. paste rather than powder
-make sure process of handling the substance is exposed so it doesn’t escape
-have as few workers as possible
-wear protective clothing
what is denatured alcohol
alcohol that is undrinkable due to denaturants added to it, which makes it poisonous but cheaper
pros and cons of denatured alcohol
pros: preserves specimens, used in toiletries e.g. perfumes, cleaning prducts. industrial solvent
cons: hospital patients may drink hand sanitizser to get drunk
what are the 3 types of denatured alcohol
-CDA: completely denatured alcohol
-IDA: industrialised denatured alcohol
-TSDA: trade specific alcohol (used in cosmetics etc.
what are the requirements for purchasing and supplying CDA
-pharmacies can supply to customers without restrictions from wholesalers
-members of the public don’t need a license or authorisation to purchase CDA
requirements for purchasing and suppling IDA
-anyone who wants IDA must be authorised by HMRC
-authorised users can only supply to other authorised users
-authorised pharmacy users can only suply quantities of less than 20 litres at any one time
storage and labelling of IDA and TSDA
-all locked in a sensible place
-all containers must say ‘for external use only’ or ‘not to be taken’
what are the records for TSDA and IDA
-stocks received and supplied
-importds
-class of DA
-quanitites
-copies of person’s authorisation number
how to supply regulated substances to a member of the public (restricted to certain buyers)
-purchaser must have an explsoives precursors and poisons (EPP) license issues by the home office
-check photo ID and see if its unaltered and in date
-warning labels attached to the packaging stating that the possession of the substance to the general public is restricted
what do the general public require when purchasing regulated substances/ poisons (substances that are available for the general public but needs to be monitored)
EPP license (expolisve precursors and poisons) issued by the home office.
-must provide personal information e.g. address, DoB. Details of the type and volume of the poison they want to buy
-home office will make a health and criminal background before issuing a license
whats on poison register
-supply date
-name and address of the purchaser
-the name and quantity of the regulated poison supplied
-stated purpose of the purchase
-purchaser must sign this record
