The Plant Kingdom- Flowering Flashcards
How do pants manage to get pollinated while being sessile
They have special adaptions to allow them to attract pollinators such as insects, nirds and wind, to disperse their pollen to other plants of the same species and make sexual reproduction possible
What are pollen grains
The sperm cells of plants, and each species has its own highly characteristically shaped pollen grains
When and how are pollen grain usually shed
Usually in spring, when there is abundant moisture, sunlight and warmth o allow young seedlings to grow after pollination has resulted in a seed formation, fruiting, seed dispersal, and finally germination
And in huge quantities
What are flowers
Special reproductive structures
What are all the things flowers do
Produce pollen and ova, they also have large colourful petals and tepals that are hug,y visible to pollinators
What are bee pollinated flowers usually
Blue purple or yellow cos they’re easy detected by bees
Bird pollinated are usually
Red or orange
What are nectar guides
Special patterns in contrasting colors that can sometimes be found on some of the petals or tepals, directing the pollinator to the nectar reward provided by the plant to entice the animal to Visit it
What’s another way plants attract pollinators
With scents
How do they use these scents and when give an example
At certain times to attract the pollinators that are around at a certain time
For eg. Moth pollinated flowers tend to release a sweet smell at night to attract the moths when they’re most active
What is mimicry
It’s used by plants so they can mimic a female insect so that the male insect comes to the plant and therefor collects pollen that will now be dispersed
What is sled pollination and How is self pollination reduced
It’s when a plant manège to pollinate themselves
Make and female parts mature at different times and the arrangements of the stamens and pistil prevent it
