The Plant Kingdom Flashcards
List the four Phylums
- Phylum Bryophyta
- Phylum Pteridophyta
- Phylum Gymnospermae
- Phylum Magnoliophyta
Provide knowledge on Phylum Byrophyta
Body is called a thallus
Having no roots, leaves nor stems
Has no vascular system and obtains water through osmosis
Has rhizoids to anchor the plant and absorb moisture
Have no waxy cuticle and therefore require shaded area to grow as to not dry up
Reproduce using spores
Grow close to each other to retain moisture
Provide 3 examples of Phylum Bryophyta
Moss, Hornwort, Liverwort
Provide knowledge on the Phylum Pteridophyta
Environment;
Damp/moist env. for reproduction although their waxy cuticle allows for colonisation of drier areas
Structure;
Fronds made up of pinnae (smaller leaves)
Rhizomes (underground stems)
Reproduction;
Sori are found on the underside of fronds and produce spores
Contain a vascular system (fronds grow larger)
Contain waxy cuticle (loose little water)
Give an example of Phylum Pteridophyta
Maidenhair Fern
Provide knowledge on Phylum Gymnospermae
Environment; Cold and dry areas Structure; Trees/shrubs needle-like leaves (waxy cuticle+low S.A=low waterlos) cones producing seeds Reproduction; Male cones release pollen which lands on a female cone causing fertilisation and a production of seeds Evergreen
Example of Phylum Gymnospermae
Aleppo pine
Provide knowledge on Phylum Magnoliophyta
Flowering plants Monocot Dicot Use insect and wind pollination Reproduce by seeds
Describe features of monocotyledons
Multiples of 3 floral parts Parallel array of leaf veins 1 pore per pollen grain Distributed vascular bundles Fibrous root system
Describe features of dicotyledons
Multiples of 4 or 5 floral parts Netlike array of leaves 3 pores per pollen grain Vascular bundles arranged in a ring form Tap root system
