Fungi Kingdom Flashcards
Give an example of a multicellular fungus
Mucor
Give an example of a unicellular fungus
Yeast
Explain the structure of mucor
Made up of hyphae and sporangium
Explain feeding of mucor
Enzymes from hyphae tips release digestive enzymes which digest food externally. Soluble food is absorbed into the cytoplasm through hyphae walls
Explain reproduction of mucor
Spores form in the sporangium which breaks once they ripen. Spores which land on suitable environment grow into fungus
Explain reproduction in yeast
Budding
Explain the structure of yeast
Cell wall made of chitin
What are hyphae made of (4 organelles)
Multicellular tubes made of; cell walls made of chitin, cytoplasm, vacuole, multiple nuclei
Benefits of fungi (give 3)
- Production of wine/beer
- Medicine
- Decomposition of dead matter
- Food source
Harms of fungi (give 2)
- Spoilage of food
2. Parasitic fungi; Disease athlete’s foot
