The Physics of Light Flashcards
Reflection
The redirecting of light due to meeting a certain type of object
Refraction
When light penetrates through a object at a different angle to the one with which it entered due to .Reflection can also simultaneously occur with the light being split into two rays upon meeting the translucent object ; One that penetrates at a different angle and the one that is
Transparent
When light is penetrating straight through
Translucent
When light is only partly blocked
Opaque
Where light is completely blocked
How does light affect colour?
When white light, which contains all 7 colours, hits an object, some of those colours are absorbed and those that are not and are reflected are perceived by the eye.The mixture of those colours that were reflected is what we see as the colour of the object.
Why does an object appear black?
Because all colours are absorbed by it
Why would an object appear white?
Because no colours are absorbed by it
How do coloured lights affect an object?
It only projects certain rays at an object. So if it absorbs those rays it would appear whatever colour was projected but not absorbed. Eg. Under white light an object appears green. If only red light is shone at an object it appears black.
What does the acronym ROYGBIV stand for?
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet -Basically the seven colours
What are the three primary colours of light
Red Green Blue
Pupil
Allows light inside
Iris
Controls pupil size
Lens
Focuses light onto retina
Retina
Detect light using photoreceptors
