Separation Techniques and States of Matter Flashcards
What is a Solvent?
A substance that dissolves another substance.
What is in a solution?
A solvent and a solute
What is an aqueous solution?
An aqueous solution is a solution where the solvent is water.
What is a Solute?
The substance that is being dissolved by the Solvent
What is Distillation?
A separation technique that uses the different evaporation points of a substance to get one substance to turn into a gas and pass into a cooled container were it will go back to a liquid while the other liquid is left in another container.
What is Filtration?
It is a separation technique where a liquid is drained through very small holes,so small that the solids are left above the filter while the liquid sinks through.
What is Centrifuging?
It is a process that uses rotational or centrifugal force to push the heaviest particles outwards and keeps the lightest closer to the inside.
What is Sublimation?
When a solid goes straight to gas.
What is Deposition?
When a gas goes straight to a solid.

The ways states of matter change
What is a Suspension?
When particles have not yet settled, but are large enough to do so,due to the force of gravity.
What is a Colloid?
When particles are dispersed throughout a mixture but are too small to settle.
What is Condensation?
Condensation is when a gas becomes a liquid.
What is Freezing?
When a liquid becomes a solid.
What is Evaporation?
When a liquid becomes a gas.
