The Periodic Table Flashcards
How did Mendeleev arrange the periodic table with elements known at that time?
In order of increasing atomic mass. He grouped elements with similar chemical properties
How did Mendeleev use his table to predict the existence and properties of elements that had not been discovered yet?
He left gaps from undiscovered elements. He predicted the mass and chemical properties according to other elements in the group
What links the number of outer electrons in an atom with its position on the periodic table?
Number of outer e⁻ = the group number
What links the number of shells an atom has with its position on the periodic table?
The number of occupied e⁻ shells = the group number
