Group 7 - Halogens Flashcards
Colour of element + physical state at room temp : Fluorine
Yellow, gas
Colour of element + physical state at room temp : Chlorine
Green, gas
Colour of element + physical state at room temp : Bromine
Dark red, liquid
Colour of element + physical state at room temp : Iodine
Purple/black, solid
Displacement reaction between a halogen and the aqueous salt of another halogen
A more reactive halogen can displace of a less reactive halogen in an ionic halide compound
Pattern in reactivity of group 7 elements in terms of electronic configurations
Halogens react by gaining 1 e⁻ to form X⁻ ion. Down group 7, the halogens become less reactive, the atomic radius and shielding increases so the incoming e⁻ is further from the nucleus and attracted less strongly
